How to Re-String a Crane Grab Claw

Posted

To restring your grab claw as a part of your maintenance you will need the following: Thin-nose pliers, a torch or lighter, scissors or wire cutters, pliers or grips and 1.2 metres of crane cord/string.

  1. To remove the old cord from the grab claw, firstly undo the skin top from the claw’s top cap.
  2. Cut the knot and pull the string through the skin top.
  3. Pull the cord through the plunger bar and unwind the cord from the bobbin and small wheels.
  4. Pull through the knot and the cord from the bobbin and cut the knot. Pull the cord out.
  5. To re-string the grab claw firstly cut a piece of cord 1.2m long. Use a torch or lighter to make a point on the end of the cord.
  6. Take the skin top (metal and rubber inner) and thread through the cord. Knot the end twice to ensure that the knot is secure in the skin top and won’t pull through. Cut the cord neatly at the end of the knot if there is excess cord hanging.
  7. Screw the skin top back onto the top cap and secure tightly.
  8. Use a torch or lighter to make a point on the other end of the cord. Thread the cord through the plunger bar. Thread the cord through the hole on the large bobbin and tie two knots. Cut off the excess cord.
  9. Wind the cord around the large bobbin, around the wheel and then around the smaller wheel. Tension the cord. Now your crane grab claw is ready to replace back into the grabber machine.
